CUP: Waltrip Changes Crew Chiefs

Michael Waltrip Racing on Tuesday became the third NASCAR Sprint Cup team to make a crew chief change in the past week, announcing that Bobby Kennedy would take over atop the pit box for Waltrip’s No. 55 Toyota.
Kennedy will switch roles with Waltrip’s former crew chief, Paul Andrews, who will take over management of MWR’s test teams. Kennedy was one of Waltrip’s first employees when he formed his team and has served in a variety of capacities, including competition director.
Unlike last season and the first five races of this year, Waltrip has a guaranteed starting spot in Sunday’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway. He is currently 30th in NASCAR Sprint Cup owner points and therefore will not have to qualify on speed on Friday.

MWR is the third Cup team to make a crew chief change in the last eight days. Hall of Fame Racing promoted Steve Boyer to crew chief on March 18, replacing Brandon Thomas, while Gene Nead left Wood Brothers Racing on March 24 to return to Bill Davis Racing as an engineer. Nead’s replacement has not been named.
