With Daytona Speedweeks little more than a month away, many details remain to be finalized among four prominent NASCAR Sprint Cup teams as 2009 begins.
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, the four-car team created from what once were the three-car Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates squad and the four-car Dale Earnhardt Inc. outfit, is expected to finalize its driver-sponsor lineup late this week or early next week, EGR spokesman John Olguin told SPEEDtv.com on Monday.
EGR will campaign Chevrolet Impalas in 2009, operating out of the former Ganassi shop in Concord, N.C. So far, Martin Truex Jr. (No. 1, Bass Pro Shops as primary sponsor), Juan Pablo Montoya (No. 42, Wrigley’s primary sponsor for 19 races) and Aric Almirola (No. 8, no sponsor named yet) have been confirmed as drivers, with Bobby Labonte mentioned as a possible driver for the No. 41, which has sponsorship from Target.
Right now, the team has an opening for one driver and sponsors for Almirola for the full season and Montoya for half a season.
Meanwhile, the mystery continues into what exactly will happen if and when Gillett Evernham Motorsports and Petty Enterprises complete their merger discussions. PE released most of its remaining employees last week, and it is expected that GEM will campaign the iconic PE No. 43 next year. But again on Monday, GEM spokesman Drew Brown told SPEEDtv.com that no announcements were pending.
Elliott Sadler, who was released from GEM, has filed a breach-of-contract notice with North Carolina Superior Court in Statesville, N.C., against GEM and driver AJ Allmendinger, who may replace Sadler on the team. Sadler’s filing is not a lawsuit, but it indicated that he could sue over his release.
