Neither Martin Truex Jr. nor Pat Tryson would rank Martinsville Speedway among their favorite tracks.

But after Truex placed fifth Monday in the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500, maybe the 0.526-mile oval will be a place they look forward to returning to in October.

In eight previous Martinsville starts, Truex had only one top-10 finish while the others were 19th or worse.

“A great day for us – it’s my best run ever here at Martinsville so I’m real happy with it,” Truex said.

Tryson, who has had good days at Martinsville as a crew chief for Mark Martin and Kurt Busch, seemed just as excited as Truex about the performance of the Michael Waltrip Racing team.

“We were hoping to come out of here with a top-10, and to get a top-five was even better,” Tryson said. “We didn’t have quite enough for [race-winner] Denny [Hamlin] and a couple of those guys, but all in all, a pretty good day. … We both hate it here. It definitely shows we’re capable of running places we don’t like.

“It’s not either one of our favorite places. But to get a good run, as tough as things are here, is really important. It gives us some momentum going to some good tracks we’ve got coming up.“

Part of the reason Truex finished fifth was a four-tire call near the end of the race. And another was that he had a good top-10 car most of the day.

“Usually we’re on the wrong end of the deal at the end there,” Truex said. “It was a good run for us today. … We were just solid and ran around the top-10 all day. The guys had awesome pit stops as usual – that helped us a lot.

“Pat did a good job making adjustments on the car and calling the race. At the end, we were right where we needed to be.”

In his first year at Michael Waltrip Racing after four seasons under the Dale Earnhardt Inc. banner, Truex moved up two spots in points 18th. He is 66 points out of 12th after the season’s first six Sprint Cup races.

“I think he’s a great driver, and we’re just going to get better as the year goes on,” said Tryson, who came to MWR from Penske Racing to work with Truex. “We’re working on stuff. Hopefully the spoiler package is going to help us some. If we can keep getting runs like this, we’ll be in good shape.”
