Truex will team with David Reutimann, who won the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 last year, and owner/driver Michael Waltrip, who will run a handful of races this year.

Perhaps most importantly, he will be paired with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson, who the team hired away from Penske Racing. Tryson has eight career victories with Elliott Sadler, Mark Martin and Kurt Busch.

“Having been successful with a lot of different drivers, he brings a lot to the table,” Truex says. “We had a great test at Atlanta. The group is fired up and everybody is excited. Things are looking good.”

Tryson won five races and made the Chase two of the past three years with Kurt Busch. He is equally confident in Truex.

“He just needs us to do a great job to get him great race cars,” Tryson says. “I think he has proven he can drive, now it’s a matter of him doing it every week with good equipment.”

Like Truex, Tryson marvels at the cars and equipment at MWR and the level of support Toyota brings. He says Toyota is more involved in the MWR organization than any manufacturer he has ever worked with.

He believes the new environment will be good for him and his driver.

“Any time an organization brings in new people and new ideas, that can’t do anything but help,” Tryson says. “Change, whether it’s something I brought or Martin brought, or something [crew chief] Rodney [Childers] already had, it just opens up new ideas and new things to try and it elevates everybody. It brings in fresh, new ideas and new enthusiasm.”

It certainly has Truex pumped up.

“A year and a half has gone by and the results haven’t been there at all,” he said of his tenure at DEI and Earnhardt Ganassi. “We’ve had some great runs and had some chances to win races, but at the end of the day, the results weren’t there, and that is no fun.

“It drives you absolutely nuts when you run up front all day and you finish 25th, especially for a year and a half. We had some great runs, but it was time for a change and time to do something different. We definitely have something to prove.”
