Restrictor-plate racing seems to agree with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. EGR’s Juan Pablo Montoya claimed the pole for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway, with teammate and Daytona 500 pole-winner Martin Truex Jr. qualifying third. That’s a solid effort, no matter how you look at it.

But the big story at Talladega isn’t Montoya’s pole or where Truex qualified, but where Truex might race next year. The Mayetta, N.J., native last year signed a one-year contract extension with Dale Earnhardt Inc., which over the winter merged with Chip Ganassi’s outfit.

The merger was something of a shotgun marriage, with two teams who began 2008 with seven cars now fielding just two, because of the difficulty of finding sponsorship.

And that has fueled speculation that Truex will be headed for greener pastures next season, something the driver deftly tap-danced around after his qualifying run at Talladega Saturday afternoon. Without admitting whether he should stay or he should go, Truex made it abundantly clear that he’s thinking a lot about it.

“I am laying out the groundwork to make the proper decisions,” Truex said when queried about his 2010 plans. “It is a tough process because obviously you have to like what is going on here. Whether I go or whether I stay, I need to keep these people happy. We need to stay on the same page and work hard to get better together. It is kind of a balancing act and it is something you have to juggle. But, right now I am focused and committed with this team 100 percent and we will move forward and see what we can make happen.”
