Defending Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne says he understands the commotion that has shadowed the deeply religious Tim Tebow, quarterback of the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

He understands Tebow’s devout beliefs and is awed and inspired by what he has seen.

“I think it's a really great thing that [he] is staying firm in what he believes in,” Bayne said Friday after a second day of testing for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams at Daytona International Speedway.

“He's not letting that change him. I can see how that would be really hard when you have that much flak that you’re catching, whether it’s good or it’s bad – if people are talking about it so much, it would be easy to change and waver, but I think the reason he doesn’t is because it’s real.”

Bayne, the driver of the Wood Brothers Racing Ford, pulled off one of the most surprising victories in the history of the sport last season, winning the series’ biggest event in only his second career start. He has spoken often of his own spiritual convictions, and recently released his own book, aimed at kids 9 to 12, he said, that provides basic information about racing as well as his own faith.

Tebow, whose Broncos have reached the second round of the playoffs, has been lauded by some and criticized by others for his public displays of faith and football. Bayne says the issue has been “polarizing” because it isn’t status quo.

“It’s something different that I think our world needs and I think it desires,” he said. “So when you look at somebody and you see something different, you wonder what that is ... I think Tim has made that very clear ... and I think that’s our mission.

“If we look different from the world, it’s because of Jesus.”

If anything, Bayne said, he wishes he “could wear my faith on my sleeve a little bit more like he does.

“He is everything that he says,” Bayne said, “and I think that’s what’s so awesome because we see so much in our world that’s just people talking up a big game and they talk all this stuff, but they’re not really what they say they are.

“And I think he really is.”

While the two have met and spoken on occasion, Bayne said they “haven’t talked in a little while.”

“I think I was in the studio to do The Ellen [DeGeneres] Show [and that] was the first time we talked,” he said. “I talked to him again at the ESPYs. ... He’s just a really incredible person.”
