The drafting duo of Travis Kvapil and Casey Mears put up the fastest number at Talladega Superspeedway Friday as practice began for Sunday’s Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500.

Kvapil topped the speed chart at 200.452 miles per hour, and Mears was a tick behind at 200.322. They were the only drivers over 200 in the 45-minute session.

Following in the top five were Jeff Gordon, point leader Brad Keselowski and David Ragan.

In the second five were Denny Hamlin (third in points), Regan Smith, Carl Edwards, Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jimmie Johnson, who is second in points entering the Chase’s fourth race, was 37th on the speed list after apparently running qualifying setups most of the session.

A second practice is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. (ET) Friday. It will be televised by SPEED.
