Chicagoland Speedway ought to be right in Jack Roush’s wheelhouse. And there is no question that Roush Fenway Racing, the team Roush co-owns with Boston Red Sox magnate John Henry, is more than overdue for a victory.

So will this be the weekend the team breaks two winless streaks, 0-8 at the 1.5-mile track in Joliet, Ill., and 0-16 in the most recent races this season?

The five-car team’s drivers certainly hope so. Matt Kenseth opened the year with consecutive victories in the Daytona 500 and the Auto Club 500, but the entire team has gone winless since, a baffling state of affairs for the perennial NASCAR Sprint Cup powerhouse.

As recently as 2005, Roush Fenway won 15 races in a single season and placed all five of its drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. And last year alone, Carl Edwards won nine races in Roush Fords, most of any driver in the series.

Historically, car owner Roush has concentrated on the high-banked 1.5- and 2-mile tracks that make up nearly half of the Cup schedule, rather than the four restrictor-plate tracks or the road courses and short tracks. In theory, that should make the D-shaped, Chicagoland Speedway and its 18-degree corners perfect for Roush’s squad.

But the team has been shutout here, with Chevrolets winning six of the eight previous races and Dodge and Toyota one each. The Roush squad will be looking to reverse that this weekend.
