As characters go, few truly deserve to wear the title “larger than life.”

Robert Glenn Johnson, better known to friends and foes alike simply as “Junior,” is one of those people for whom the phrase “larger than life” not only applies, but is an understatement.

Bootlegger.

Farmer.

Businessman.

Bare-knuckled racer.

Ferocious driver, superbly skilled mechanic.

Engaging storyteller.

The man who brokered the deal to bring R.J. Reynolds into NASCAR.

Last American Hero.

And now, one of five man who will be inducted into NASCAR’s inaugural Hall of Fame on May 23, 2010.

Junior Johnson is all of that and more. And if you don’t believe him, just ask him. Of course, it ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up, and a quick glance at the record book is iron-clad proof that Johnson not only talked the talk, he walked the walk.

He is credited with inventing the art of drafting at the Daytona 500, which he won in 1960, one of 50 victories on his resume as a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver. Even more impressive is Johnson’s record as an owner: six Sprint Cup championships, three each with Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, and 132 race victories.
