CUP: The House That Jimmie Built

There’s a good reason that Lowe’s Motor Speedway is nicknamed “The House That Jimmie Built.”

Jimmie Johnson, who will be a guest on SPEED’s RaceDay Saturday at 4 p.m. EDT, and the rest of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team collectively have been a force of nature at the 1.5-mile track, where Johnson’s accomplishments are legion.

In 2003, in just his second year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Johnson won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race and Coca-Cola 600 on successive weekends at Lowe’s.

He repeated his 600 victory again in 2004, winning NASCAR’s longest race from the pole. He followed that up with a victory in the fall Lowe’s race, making it two straight at the 1.5-mile track.

But Johnson was only getting started.

Again in 2005, he put the Lowe’s-sponsored No. 48 Chevrolet into victory lane at both LMS points races. A year later, he won the All-Star race for a second time and was runner-up in both of the points races,
trailing Kasey Kahne each time.

Last year, Johnson slumped a little, finishing 10th in the Coca-Cola 600 and crashing en route to a 14th-place run in the fall race, but despite those finishes, his cars were plenty fast, as they were in testing last month.

And while Johnson isn’t having the kind of dominating season he did last year, when he won 10 races and a second consecutive Sprint Cup championship, he will be a man to dealt with before the next two weekends are over. He and the team have shown that they can go from being also-rans to red hot in an instant, which makes him doubly dangerous now.

Johnson said he’s primed for NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, which will be televised live on SPEED, beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

“It is a great night. I think everybody looks forward to it, it doesn’t matter if you are a driver or a crew member or whatever that may be, everybody is fired up for that race,” said Johnson of the All-Star weekend.
