CUP: Teams Looking Towards 2010

This just in: Hendrick Motorsports kicked the living stuffing out of the rest of the Sprint Cup field in 2009.

But despite the world-class beatdown administered by Rick Hendrick’s minions this season, the rest of the NASCAR teams aren’t sitting still waiting to be drubbed again in 2010. Not at all.

Of course, wanting to climb to the top of the hill and getting there are two different matters entirely. Take Carl Edwards . Last year, Edwards finished with a tremendous flurry, winning three of the final four races of the Sprint Cup season en route to a series-high nine victories overall and a second-place points finish.

When Edwards put his Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion into victory lane at Homestead-Miami Speedway in last year’s season-ending Ford 400, he seemed like a dead nuts on lock to challenge Jimmie Johnson for the 2009 title.

But Edwards never mounted a serious title challenge this year, going winless heading into Sunday’s season-ender at Homestead. And so, he’s kind of scratching his head wondering about next season.

“If I look at last season, a year ago I was sitting here looking forward to this season thinking, ‘Alright, we’re gonna go win nine or 10 races. We’re gonna
dominate the championship. That’s the plan,’” said Edwards. “That’s still the plan for next year, it’s just that things come and go so easily. It’s very tough to make a plan for your results.”

Still, it’ll be back to the drawing board for the Roush Fenway Racing squad over the brief off-season.

And Edwards’ teammate, Greg Biffle , said he’s in the same boat and doesn’t know what the team can do about it.

“We’re in a predicament, I believe, because we can’t test anywhere,” said Biffle. “Our simulation is not proving to be enough, otherwise we’d be competing and winning races now, so I don’t know what we’re going to do to be more competitive next year, because if we knew, we’d be doing it right now. So, I’m not sure. I’m asking myself the same thing.”

“I know for our performance we’re gonna do everything we can this winter,” said Edwards. “I think it was a big wake-up call for me and our team that you could become uncompetitive so easily and we’re just gonna work hard. I don’t know what’s gonna happen next year. I hope we get back on track.”
