Tony Stewart put up the best lap of the weekend’s first Subway Fresh Fit 500 Sprint Cup practice at Phoenix International Raceway in the closing minutes of the 90-minute session.

Stewart ran 138.680 miles per hour to edge Mark Martin, who was clocked at 138.611.

Greg Biffle was third at 138.568.

Brendan Gaughan and Ryan Newman whacked the outside wall during the session.

Newman is going to a backup car for the second practice session, scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (ET) Friday. SPEED will televise the session.

“I opened my entry up a little too far,” said Newman, who had the session’s fourth fastest speed. “I got a little aggressive and just got loose getting in, and that was it.”
