Tony Stewart looked relaxed and happy Thursday afternoon, when he rolled into the infield media center at Chicagoland Speedway, site of Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400.

And why not?

The two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion is leading the points in his first season as co-owner/driver of the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet Impala SS, he’s coming off a victory last weekend at Daytona International Speedway and he is rapidly becoming the favorite to win his third title this season. And, oh yeah, Chicagoland is a track where he already has two victories.

With all that working in his favor, Stewart was in too good in a mood to get drawn into a debate with Kyle Busch about the contact the two had at Daytona, which resulted in Busch crashing spectacularly while Stewart won the race.

Earlier in the afternoon, Busch had blamed Stewart for the contact, but Stewart was having no part of discussing it. Pressed on the issue by one of the reporters on hand, Stewart said, “I’m not biting on your lure and you haven’t been around here as long as most of these guys and they know I’m not biting on it so I am damn sure not going to bite on yours. Sorry.”

What he would talk about, though, was the success of his team.

“I’ve been excited, obviously,” said Stewart, who qualified 32nd for Saturday night’s race. “This was a big weekend for us a year ago. I don’t think any of us would have predicted that a year from then and today that we would be here leading the point standings and have three wins this season. Very excited about it. It’s been a long road — it’s been a long year, but one that’s been very gratifying and a lot of fun at the same time with a lot of work. Been very, very happy with that.”
