Owning a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team carries with it any number of headaches, from how much you pay your driver to how many interviews you need to give to finding multi-million dollar sponsors.
Driving for a Cup team brings headaches as well, many much different than an owner’s.
Imagine, then, the headaches of an owner and a driver. You’d have the life of Tony Stewart, co-owner and driver for Stewart-Haas Racing. Consider that he’s in the first year as co-owner of the team, too, and you’d figure there are even more headaches.
Yet, here is Stewart, smiling all the way to the top of the Cup standings and one of the favorites to win the Chase For The Sprint Cup.
How’s he sleeping? Like a baby.
“I’ve been sleeping better than I’ve slept in years actually and the reason for that is Bobby Hutchens,” said Stewart, referring to competition director for his team. “Having Bobby Hutchens and [Stewart crew chief] Darian Grubb and [Ryan Newman crew chief] Tony Gibson and Ryan Newman and the people that we’ve got at Stewart-Haas, it gives me that flexibility to make sure that I get my time, my rest.
“It’s having the right people in the right positions. When you have that you don’t have to babysit. You don’t have to sit over top of them and watch everything they’re doing because you know they’re doing a good job. You know they’re doing it the way you would want it done. That itself gives you the peace of mind and know when you lay down at the end of the day that you can rest.”
And that’s the key to his success this season, Stewart said. Stewart himself isn’t taking much credit for his stellar season in the No. 14, instead putting the focus on his team members.
