Today’s Michael Waltrip Racing and NAPA Auto Parts press announcement will be televised live on SPEED and streamed on SPEEDtv.com starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
At that press conference, MWR is expected to announce that Martin Truex Jr. will drive the No. 55 NAPA Toyota Camry next season, as team co-owner Michael Waltrip will focus on management responsibilities.
Waltrip, 46, is one of the most experienced drivers on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. His first race was the 1985 Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where he started 24th and finished 28th. Since then, the popular Waltrip has made 741 Cup starts, winning four races. He has also posted 39 top-five and 127 top-10 finishes, along with five poles.
MWR is enjoying what is by far the team’s best season since it began racing full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2007. David Reutimann won the Coca-Cola 600 in May, the first race victory for the team.
As a reward for the victory, team co-owner Rob Kauffman on Wednesday presented Reutimann and crew chief Rodney Childers each with his own vintage 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang.
Apparently the rewards proved inspirational, as Reutimann topped the speed charts in Thursday’s final “Happy Hour” practice session for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
Truex made his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut with Dale Earnhardt Inc. on
Halloween 2004 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he started 33rd and finished 37th. He has spent his entire Cup career at DEI and its successor, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. He has made 134 career starts in NASCAR’s top division, with one victory, 12 top-five and 34 top-10 finishes.
After the press conference, SPEEDtv.com will provide detailed analysis and commentary.
