SPEED Associate Producer Justin Burnett was honored this week with a 2012 Russ Catlin Award for his Veteran’s Day feature that ran as part of the popular program, NASCAR Race Hub, in November of last year.

“For me, this piece crystallizes everything that makes racing, and sports in general, great,” said Burnett, who has been with SPEED for nearly two years. “Far away from the bright spotlight of a NASCAR race weekend, Accessible Racing (http://www.accessibleracing.com/) is using their passion for racing as a vehicle for inspiration and change. I felt that the sincerity and resolve of the veterans, particularly 1st Lt. Ian James Brown, would likewise inspire viewers and the judges.”

As part of the annual Taxslayer.com Motorsports Journalism Awards in honor of motor sports media pioneer Russ Catlin and presented by Charlotte Motor Speedway, Burnett’s segment earned high praise from the Indiana University School of Journalism judging panel.

Among the judges’ comments: A timely feature that demonstrates racing’s contributions beyond the track; this story’s effectiveness lies in its use of multiple sources and themes. It addresses a serious social issue with an updated approach and shows how racing can benefit society. This story meets all technical requirements while telling an inspiring story.

Burnett is the second SPEED producer to win the Russ Catlin Award. Associate producer Rob Nelson took home the honor for his work in 2003.
