Elliott Sadler logged a blistering lap of 195.397 mph to breeze to the pole Friday for Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Sadler upstaged the championship-contending trio of Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin in the time trial session. Johnson qualified 17th, Harvick 26th and Hamlin 30th.

Sadler, closing out his time this season with Richard Petty Motorsports, won the eighth pole of his career on a day that also saw the announcement that he will drive the full Nationwide Series schedule next season for Kevin Harvick, Inc.

Following Sadler in the top five were Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya and David Ragan as Fords took four of the first five spots.

Trevor Bayne qualified for his first Sprint Cup Series start in the Wood Brothers Ford. He will start 28th.
