Somebody forgot to tell Elliott Sadler that the opening round of practice for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard was a Hendrick Motorsports party.

Sadler stunned the Indianapolis Motor Speedway crowd late in the one-hour session, when he put down a lap of 179.190 miles per hour to place his No. 19 Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodge atop the speed charts for the first of two rounds of practice Friday at the fabled 2.5-mile track.

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were hot on Sadler’s heels, winding up second, third and fifth, respectively.

In an impressive display of early speed, two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Johnson had a fast lap of 178.642 mph in his Hendrick Chevrolet Impala SS. Gordon, a four-time Brickyard winner, was third at 177.799 mph, while Earnhardt was fifth at 176.734 mph.

Fourth came Mark Martin, who is moving to Hendrick next season. He had a fast lap of 177.050 mph in his Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevy.

Leading the second five was the year’s dominant performer, Kyle Busch and his all-conquering Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry, which ran 176.751 mph, good enough for sixth
place. Rounding out the top 10 were Jason Leffler, Casey Mears, Ryan Newman and Brian Vickers.

Sam Hornish Jr., a past Indy 500 winner, had the first incident of the session, looping his Penske Racing Dodge, though he kept it off the wall.
