Elliott Sadler, driver of the No. 19 Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodge Charger, injured his back working out and playing golf last week and as a result missed the start of Friday’s opening round of practice for the Goody’s Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Dennis Setzer replaced him during the session.

Mark McArdle, the team’s vice president and managing director of competition, said Friday morning that the team will “have to make a decision as the day goes on as to exactly what our plans will be with regard to putting Elliott in the car for qualifying or not. We’re going to take it on an hour-by-hour, day-by-day basis for the course of the rest of the weekend.”

Sadler, understandably, was not happy about his injury. “My back started to hurt late Wednesday and the pain was more noticeable when I got up Thursday,” said the Virginia native. “It was a normal week for me, so that's what really
gets me more than anything. Nothing hurts a driver more than not being in his race car with his team. My goal is to be better by Sunday so I can race."

McArdle said the team’s main priority was making sure Sadler recovered quickly. “What’s important of course is doing what’s best for Elliott to make sure that we don’t exaggerate or exasperate his injuries any further,” McArdle said. “So we’re taking medical advice to ensure that we do the right things in that regard.”
