Jack Roush, who was injured in a plane crash in Oshkosh, Wis. last week, was upgraded to fair condition Sunday evening at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., officials from Roush Fenway Racing said Monday.

The co-owner of Roush Fenway and chairman of Roush Enterprises will continue to be treated at Mayo Clinic for facial injuries. There has been no timetable set for his release from the hospital.

Roush, 68, was involved in a plane crash while trying to land his plane at Wittman Regional Airport. He was able to walk away from the crash but pictures showed a bloodied face and he had surgery on Tuesday night. He is expected to have more surgery, team officials said Sunday at Pocono Raceway.

Roush talked to Roush Fenway officials and his drivers by phone throughout the weekend and before Sunday’s race at Pocono, which was won by Roush driver Greg Biffle. Roush also talked to Biffle after the race.

“He sounded real good and we had a real good conversation,” Roush Fenway General Manager Robbie Reiser said. “He’s all there. He knows what’s going on, knows what happened to him and he understands everything.

“His deal was to tell us that we shouldn’t worry about him. We should worry about what we’re supposed to be doing. It was typical Jack – more worried about what we’re doing than what he’s doing. That’s the way he is.”

Driver Carl Edwards talked to Roush prior to the race.

“He was Jack. ‘Don’t mess anything up. Don’t wreck. I hope I don’t break any parts for you and I’ll see you soon,’” said Edwards, who finished third at Pocono “He was excited for the race today. I could hear it in his voice. He’s been through a lot this last week. He needed a race today.”

Biffle said Roush was upbeat and in good spirits when he talked to him after Sunday’s race.

“He’s excited,” Biffle said after his 15th career Cup win. “When he was telling me what he thought of me, he was proud of what happened today.”

Roush issued a statement through the team after the race.

“It’s a proud day for Ford, Greg Biffle, [crew chief] Greg Erwin, [sponsor] 3M, [his crew] the Pit Bulls, and all of the wonderful sponsors who have stood by us these last few months,” Roush said in the statement. “I’m comforted in having [general manager] Robbie Reiser at the helm in my absence and know that things are in good hands.”
