Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth topped the speed charts in Saturday’s first of two practice sessions for Sunday’s Pepsi Max 400 at California Speedway.

Biffle, last weekend’s winner at Kansas Speedway, paced the way with a best lap of 181.837 miles per hour at the 2-mile oval. Close behind was Kenseth at 181.630 mph. Both drivers qualified in the top 10, giving further indications that Roush Fenway Racing has suddenly found some much-needed speed after a slow start to the season.

David Reutimann was third-fastest at 181.205 mph in his Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, followed by pole-sitter Jamie McMurray and four-time series champion Jeff Gordon.

The second five consisted of Denny Hamlin, AJ Allmendinger, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart.

NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson was 23rd in the session.

The final Happy Hour round of practice runs from 2:50-3:50 p.m. ET. Happy Hour will not be televised.
