Jack Roush couldn’t celebrate a win on his return to racing after his recent hospitalization, but Sunday at Michigan International Speedway provided the veteran team owner with everything but the victory.

All four Roush Fenway Racing cars finished in the top 11. Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth came home in the third, fourth and fifth spots, and David Ragan, who led briefly, was a surprise in 11th.

Biffle led the most laps – 66 – and held on to the 11th place in points with three races remaining until the Chase cutoff.

Edwards’ third-place run boosted him three points spots to sixth, and Kenseth gained a spot to ninth.

Biffle bounced back and forth between the lead and other spots in the top 10.

“We had a really fast car,” he said. “We got a weird set of tires in the middle of the race and got super tight. Then loose again. Then loose late. I could carve through traffic, but when I got in clean air there was too much air on the front of the car, and I was too loose to catch those guys.”

For Kenseth, the day was a long time coming. The finish marked his first top 10 since May and gave the 17 team a significant emotional boost with the Chase looming.

“We qualified really well and we finished out the day with our best setup, our best pit stop and our best run of the day and got a decent run out of it,” Kenseth said.

“It was a great finish for us. We hadn’t really run very good most of the day, but the pit guys executed when we needed them to. It feels good to finish up front.

“We’ve been trying as hard as we can to run up front. We just haven’t been able to do it lately, so this weekend was really good for us.”

Edwards was running down the top cars near the finish but ran out of time.

“We had the fastest car at the end,” he said. “We just didn’t have enough time. Our Fords ran really well. We had three in the top five, and it was good to have Jack back here at the race track. I wish we could have gotten a win for him.

“We are making up a lot of ground in the points and getting stronger. If we can run like this the next few races and keep competitive in the Chase, it is going to be great for us and great for all of the Ford teams.”
