Penske Racing owner Roger Penske says he plans to have Sam Hornish Jr. return to the organization’s Sprint Cup stable in 2011.

A three-time Indy Racing League champion, Hornish is in his third full season in the series and the last year of his contract.

To re-sign Hornish, Penske would need to find a sponsor. Mobil, which sponsors Hornish, is looking for another team to sponsor after Penske signed a deal with Shell/Pennzoil to sponsor driver Kurt Busch.

Hornish finished 35th in the standings in 2008 and then 28th in 2009. He is 28th after nine races this year as he still looks for his first top-10 finish of the year.

“Our plan is to run three cars next year and Sam is in that program,” Penske said. “We’re planning on it. … Sam has been with us, he won the Indy 500 with us, he came over here, he’s endured and he’s run better than his points position.”
