Kyle Busch may be down but he most certainly in not out, not if you believe his historical performance at the 0.75-mile Richmond International Raceway oval.

Busch is 14th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings and must make up at least 37 points on 12th-place Matt Kenseth if he wants to make it into the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Saturday night’s Chevy Rock ‘N’ Roll 400 at RIR is the final race of NASCAR’s regular season and the final chance for Busch and 13th-place Brian Vickers to crack the top 12 before the Chase begins.

The numbers suggest that Busch still has a very good shot. He put his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry into victory lane at RIR in May and has finished in the top five seven times in nine Cup starts there. Here’s how the entire Chase field — and Chase hopefuls — line up heading into RIR:

1. TONY STEWART, Stewart-Haas Racing. Chase status: In. In 21 starts at RIR, Stewart has three victories, nine top fives and 15 top 10s. His finishing average is an excellent 10.048 and he has led 815 laps.

2. JEFF GORDON, Hendrick Motorsports. Chase status: In. The four-time Sprint Cup champ has five poles, two victories, 12 top fives and 21 top 10s in 33 starts at RIR. He has led 1,161 laps and his finishing average is 14.879.

3. JIMMIE JOHNSON, Hendrick Motorsports. Chase status: In. Johnson, the three-time defending series champion, has two poles, three wins, four top fives and four top 10s in 15 Richmond appearances. His finishing average is 18.733 and he’s led 369 laps.

4. DENNY HAMLIN, Joe Gibbs Racing. Chase status: In. The Virginia native has two poles, three top fives, four top 10s and 600 laps led in seven races at RIR. His finishing average is 9.571, second-best in the field.

5. CARL EDWARDS, Roush Fenway Racing. Chase status: Must finish 24th or better at Richmond, finish 25th and lead at least one lap or finish 27th and lead the most laps. In 10 RIR Cup appearances, Edwards has three top 10s and has led 15 laps. His finishing average is 19.000

6. KASEY KAHNE, Richard Petty Motorsports. Chase status: Must finish 21st at RIR, finish 23rd and lead a lap or 24th and lead the most laps. Kahne, who won Sunday night in Atlanta, has 11 RIR starts. He has one pole, one victory, two top-five and five top-10 finishes here. His average finish is 18.545 and he’s led 249 laps.
