The Charlotte area will remain in the stock car racing spotlight Sunday and for the majority of the coming week as NASCAR teams continue preparations for the upcoming season.

In the focal point Sunday will be the annual convention of the National Motorsports Press Association, an organization of writers, broadcasters and photographers who cover motorsports.

The NMPA is meeting Sunday at the Embassy Suites hotel near Charlotte Motor Speedway. The organization’s annual member awards dinner will be held Sunday night, but one of the highlights of the day will be the presentation of the NMPA Richard Petty Driver of the Year award in a luncheon ceremony.

Tony Stewart, who rallied late in the season to outrun Carl Edwards and win the 2011 Sprint Cup championship, is a favorite for that award.

On Sunday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte, exhibits honoring the five men inducted into the hall Friday night will be unveiled.

Many of the journalists in the area for NMPA functions will remain in Charlotte for the following four days to participate in the 30th annual Charlotte Motor Speedway Preseason Media Tour.

An event that began in 1983 with limited participation and largely as an experiment, the media tour this year will include more than 230 motorsports journalists.

The tour will include visits to Hendrick Motorsports, Michael Waltrip Racing, Richard Childress Racing and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and other drivers and team members will be interviewed during sessions at hotel locations.

Teams typically make significant sponsor announcements during the media tour week.

The tour is scheduled to end around lunchtime Thursday with a press conference with NASCAR officials at the Hall of Fame in Charlotte.
