Drivers are never happy when they wreck, and there was plenty of blame to go around for the accidents Sunday during the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Michael Waltrip and Johnny Sauter were blaming Kyle Busch; Jeff Burton was blaming Mike Bliss; Ryan Newman was blaming restrictor-plate racing in general.

With NASCAR loosening the reins on drivers and giving them the freedom to bump draft virtually all the way around the 2.66-mile track, there was a little too much bumping and banging for some drivers in a wild race that featured a record 88 lead changes but eight caution flags, six for wrecks.

Three wrecks occurred in the final 14 laps, leading to three green-white-checkered restarts.

The biggest wreck occurred when Newman got hit from behind by Joey Logano in turns 3 and 4 on lap 189. At least nine cars were involved and several suffered heavy damage.

Newman wouldn’t blame anyone.

“It’s just the way it works,” Newman said. “It’s unfortunate. I feel like nobody did anything wrong. But it’s just a product of what happens here. It’s not racing.

“I’m not even mad at [Logano]. … These shouldn’t be points races. If we want to have races for the fans, let’s come here and do that but don’t let it affect the championship. Because it’s not racing.”

Logano took the blame.

“It looked like it was going to work,” Logano said. “I was pushing him pretty hard and we were going up towards the front and I just must have got into him a little bit the wrong way and got him loose. Then everything broke loose on that one.

“It was my fault. I was trying to get a little bit more than I could I guess.”

The other wrecks resulted in even more blame being spread around.

Burton blamed Bliss for an accident on lap 183 that also collected Jeff Gordon.

“The 09 [of Bliss] doesn’t have a brake pedal, I guess,” Burton said. “He just stayed in the gas and right-reared me as if I wasn’t there. There’s a reason he doesn’t run here every week.”

Waltrip and Sauter put blame on Kyle Busch after a Busch tap sent Sauter spinning less than midway into the event. Ten cars were involved, knocking Sauter, Waltrip and Max Papis out of the race.

“It appeared that Kyle Busch spun out the car in front of us,” Waltrip said. “We’re bump-drafting all day long and no one spun anyone out yet. It’s certainly an art. You have to be careful how you do things and evidently he wasn’t careful.

“When you set yourself to the standards that he does, you would like to think he could have figured it out by now. … You’d think that somebody with that kind of talent would be able to figure out bump-drafting. Everybody else has. I know he’s great so something went wrong.”

Sauter wasn’t happy as well.

“There’s a difference between bump drafting and flat out driving through somebody,” Sauter said. “I just know that if I wouldn’t get suspended, Kyle Busch would hate it because he wouldn’t like what would happen.”
