Everything in the new NASCAR Hall of Fame isn’t going to have a specific racing label.

For example, one of the highlighted artifacts will be a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor. It was presented by President George H.W. Bush to Richard Petty in 1992, the year Petty retired from driving.

The medal, which hall officials say Petty considers his most-prized possession, will be included in the display honoring him. Petty is one of five inductees making up the hall’s first class.

Among other artifacts scheduled for hall display are a 40 percent scale model of a race car (used for wind tunnel testing), wooden templates used by the late mechanic Smokey Yunick in building a car and a CBS Television blazer worn by racer-turned-broadcaster Ned Jarrett when he called the finish of the 1993 Daytona 500, which was won by his son, Dale.

The Hall of Fame is scheduled to open May 11 in Charlotte, N.C.
