CUP: No Luck For The Biff

Greg Biffle proved the old racing axiom about the fastest car not always winning the race. Saturday night at Darlington Raceway, Biffle led 95 laps in the Dodge Challenger 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race, but mechanical problems knocked out his Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion after 235 laps.

Biffle had a lead of more five seconds at one point and clearly was the class of the field, but a recurring problem – an inability to keep the wheels tight after a pit stop – had him complaining at the midway point of the race.

And after his car broke, the former NASCAR Nationwde and Craftsman Truck Series champion was as angry at his crew as he was at his car breaking. Biffle’s teammates, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray and Carl Edwards, also complained about loose wheels during the race.

“I guess you just go back and look at our whole history, you know?” said Biffle. “Texas was the same way, Phoenix was the same way. It’s just tough. I mean … you know we’ve got good race cars that can win races, but we can’t keep the wheels tight. I don’t know why. The wheels keep coming loose on our cars.”

As far as what broke in his No. 16 Ford, he added, “I don’t know what happened. Something mechanical, I guess.”

But Biffle’s
frustration was evident. “It’s real unfortunate,” he said. “I mean, I drive my heart out. I give it 110 percent every week and I want everybody else to do the same thing for us. Just a bad day for us.”
