Ryan Newman will start Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway from a familiar position: The first one.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver captured his eighth pole at the 1.5-mile track in Thursday night’s qualifying session, beating out Joe Gibbs Racing's Kyle Busch (188.258 mph) and Hendrick Motorsports' Jeff Gordon (188.193) with a lap of 188.475 mph.

The pole marked Newman's 44th in Cup and first of the season with the Stewart-Haas Racing team he joined this season after seven years with Penske Racing.

“It was a pretty good lap," Newman said. "I was happy with it. It could have been a little bit better - we all say that - but it was good enough to win the pole.”

Hendrick teammates Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson completed the top five, with Richard Petty Motorsports' Kasey Kahne, Phoenix Racing's Mike Bliss, Red Bull Racing's Brian Vickers, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya and Wood Brothers Racing's Bill Elliott completing the top 10.

Four drivers - Mayfield Motorsports' J.J. Yeley, H&S Motorsports' Mike Garvey, Gunselman Motorsports’ Todd Bodine and Boys Will Be Boys Racing's David Starr - failed to qualify and will miss the race.

Yeley, who ran last weekend's Sprint Showdown in place of the suspended owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield, was attempting to qualify for his first points race with the team.

Action will resume at the track on Saturday with two more practices followed by Sunday's 600-mile event at 5:45 p.m. EDT.
