Ryan Newman took the lead from Jeff Gordon on the white-flag lap and held on to win the Subway Fresh Fit 600 Saturday night at Phoenix International Raceway.

The win was the first for Newman since the 2008 Daytona 500 and was his first for Stewart-Haas Racing.

Gordon, Newman, Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth and AJ Allmendinger took the night’s final green, in that order, with two laps to go. Newman, on the inside, ran side by side with Gordon as the green was unfurled and beat Gordon to the front as they roared down the backstretch.

Gordon tried to challenge off the final turn on the last lap but couldn’t advance.

Jimmie Johnson took third, Martin fourth and Juan Pablo Montoya fifth.

“It’s been a long time coming to get back in victory lane,” Newman said. “It’s the most emotional victory I’ve had in my entire career just because it’s been so long.

“I wasn’t sure if Jeff couldn’t get going or what, but I held my line and got going off turn two.”

Gordon said he spun his tires on the restart, costing him momentum and, ultimately, the win. For the second straight race, Gordon, who now has a 36-race winless streak, lost the lead in the event’s final moments.

The biggest disappointment, though, fell on Kyle Busch, who had a comfortable lead with several laps to go when Scott Riggs’ car blew a tire and sent Riggs into the wall, causing the night’s final caution.

All of the leaders dropped onto pit road for tires, with Gordon, Newman, Martin and several others taking only two tires. Busch and Johnson took four.

Although the late-race four-tire change worked well in the previous race at Martinsville Speedway, those with two new tires prevailed over the final two laps Saturday night.

Busch, who had dominated the race’s closing miles and was within a few laps of coasting to the win, finished eighth.

Montoya and Johnson, who is at the top of the point standings, were the primary leaders during the first two-thirds of the race.

Teams faced a new element in Saturday night’s race, the seventh of the season in the Sprint Cup Series. The race was extended 63 laps to 375, causing modifications in pit-stop planning.

The race was an adventure for Denny Hamlin, who ran the entire event despite recently undergoing reconstructive surgery for a torn knee ligament. Casey Mears was standing by in Hamlin’s pit as a relief driver, but Hamlin stayed in his Toyota to take the checkered flag.

Hamlin finished 30th, however, largely because of an early-race battery problem and a stall on pit road that dropped him two laps down.

The race was slowed by numerous incidents. The first occurred when Kurt Busch slipped up the track and tapped Kasey Kahne, causing both cars to slide and putting Kahne into the wall.

A few laps later, Jamie McMurray spun after being clipped by Clint Bowyer. Brian Vickers produced the third caution by hitting the third-turn wall.
