CUP: Newman Dazzles In Desert

Ryan Newman topped the opening round of practice for Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, lapping the 1-mile oval at 132.411 miles per hour in his Penske Racing Dodge.

Jimmie Johnson was second fastest, running 132.081 mph in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. He was followed by Mark Martin, who had a best lap of 131.979 mph in his Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevrolet.

Fourth was the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Kyle Busch at 131.791 mph. Then it was the second of the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets, Casey Mears, who had a fast lap of 131.776 mph.

The second five included Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex Jr. and Tony Stewart.

Qualifying is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EST and will be televised live on SPEED. A total of 45 cars are entered in this week’s race, the smallest field all season.
