So far, Denny Hamlin is following through on his prediction.
Hamlin, who announced after Sunday’s Chase opener that he will win this weekend’s second race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, led the first round of practice for the race Friday afternoon with a speed of 134.820 miles per hour.
Following Hamlin was Jeff Gordon (134.174) as eight Chase drivers logged laps in the top 10 on the speed chart.
Also in the top five were Regan Smith, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick.
In the second five were Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards.
Juan Pablo Montoya and Stewart spun out early in the 90-minute session.
Sprint Cup qualifying is scheduled at 3:40 p.m. ET Friday.
