Juan Pablo Montoya, facing a tough 10-race run in an attempt to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup, started that march in style Friday by winning the pole for Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Montoya turned a lap at 132.337 mph to edge Kasey Kahne (132.158) for the pole, his second straight at NHMS.

Montoya is 20th in Sprint Cup points entering the 17th race of the season and trails 12th-place Carl Edwards by 161. He has had strong cars through much of the season, but accidents have left him with no wins and only four top fives.

“We have to try to finish as high as we can, but we’ve got to finish,” Montoya said. “We’ve been in a lot of wrecks that haven’t been our fault. We definitely need to have some good results.”

Completing the top five Friday were Kurt Busch, Mark Martin and Ryan Newman.

In the next five were David Reutimann, Joe Nemechek, Sam Hornish Jr., Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson.

Series point leader Kevin Harvick was 24th.

Failing to qualify were Travis Kvapil and Mike Bliss.
