Former CART and Formula 1 racer Juan Pablo Montoya topped the charts in practice for Sunday's Shelby American Cup race, with a lap of 186.168 miles per hour in his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet.

Second fast was the Penske Racing Dodge of three-time IndyCar series champion Sam Hornish Jr., who turned a lap of 186.085 mph at the 1.5-mile LVMS oval.

Then came the Hendrick onslaught, with four-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson third, followed by Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon. Positions six through eight were occupied by Ryan Newman, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch. Dale Earnhardt Jr. made it four Hendrick Chevys in the top nine, with Greg Biffle completing the top 10 in the first of the Roush Fenway Racing Fords.

The first incident occurred just three minutes into the 90-minute session, when points leader Kevin Harvick drifted high at the exit to Turn 2, smacking the outside with his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Impala SS. Harvick did not have to go to a backup.

AJ Allmendinger lost an engine in his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford during the session and will be forced to start the race from the back of the field Sunday.
