NASCAR officials confirmed Saturday that a series of Sprint Cup rule changes will be announced Jan. 21, all aimed in the interest of improving the quality of racing and stimulating fan enthusiasm.

And while most drivers have some ideas of thing they’d like to see, one of the most radical suggestions comes from Michael Waltrip, the co-owner/driver of Michael Waltrip Racing, which this year heads into its fourth season after a strong 2009 campaign.

Among the changes NASCAR is weighing are:

Replacing the rear wing with a conventional blade spoiler.

• Modifying or replacing the front splitter.

• Eliminating “no bump-draft” zones at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.

• Eliminating the double-yellow out-of-bounds line at the bottom of Daytona and Talladega.

Still, racing at the two superspeedways continues to be problematic, as drivers tend to lay back in single file until the race’s closing laps.

Waltrip, a two-time Daytona 500 winner, has a much more out-of-the-box solution that might just do away with the follow-the-leader mentality at the two superspeedways.

“I do have a good idea. I want to get this out there,” Waltrip said Saturday in Nashville, where he was attending the Sprint Sound & Speed Presented by Sun Trust event. “A point a lap for the leader at Talladega and Daytona. Let's glob those together, one point a lap. That way people will race hard at Talladega instead of doing what is smart and riding in line till you get down toward the end.”
