Shana Mayfield vowed that Mayfield Motorsports will continue despite husband Jeremy’s indefinite suspension as the owner and driver of the team following a recent failed drug test.

Shana Mayfield hugged team members on pit road prior to the NASCAR Sprint Showdown race Saturday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. She is now the listed owner of the team because husband Jeremy is banned from that role. NASCAR suspended Mayfield a week ago following a failed drug test. After his suspension, Mayfield released a statement saying a mix of prescription and over-the-counter drugs caused the positive test result. Friday, NASCAR Chairman Brian France said the automatic indefinite suspension Mayfield received is typically the result of a "serious" violation involving the use of performance-enhancing or illegal recreational drugs.

“He wants to race,” Shana Mayfield said of her husband. “He wants to be at the race track and be in the race car. He’s not doing well in that area. Other than that, we’re just going through the motions and that’s all I really want to say about that. I have no clue right now [when he’ll be back]. It’s just going through the process day by day and figuring out what our next step is going to be.”

What Shana Mayfield did say is that the No. 41 team will continue. J.J. Yeley, released by Hall of Fame Racing during the 2008 season, was in the car for the Showdown Saturday night, a qualifying event for the Sprint All-Star Race.

“We’re going on,” Shana Mayfield said. “We got J.J. in the car. We’re really excited. He’s a perfect fit for our organization right now. That’s
about it. We’re just excited about being here and having him, looking forward to next week and see what happens after that.

“We’re going to take it week by week, but J.J. is available for every week. He doesn’t have any more commitments, so if he does well this weekend, we’ll just go from there. But he’s our guy for now. We needed a guy that was available to be with this team.”

Mayfield Motorsports began its Sprint Cup operation this season as Mayfield was left without a ride following his release last year from Haas CNC Racing.

“It was a shock,” Gene Haas, who owned Haas CNC Racing, said about Jeremy’s failed test. “… We don’t really know what he did. I wish the guy well. I thought he was a heck of an athlete.”

For Mayfield, a two-time Chase For The Sprint Cup participant, owning his own team was supposed to be another chance to prove himself as a Cup driver. Now it’s Yeley’s chance.

“[Yeley] wants to race, just like Jeremy when he built this team, he wanted a second chance to race,” Shana Mayfield said. “That’s what J.J. wants to do. That’s what we’re all here to do is race.
