NASCAR has suspended Jeremy Mayfield for failing a drug test. Also suspended were Tony Martin, a crewman on the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Sprint Cup car, and Ben Williams, a crewman on the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR Nationwide Series team.

All three have been suspended indefinitely. Mayfield is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup driver to be suspended under the sanctioning body’s new drug policy.

Mayfield and the others were suspended for violating sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock-car racing) and 7-5 (violation of substance-abuse policy), according to NASCAR officials at Darlington Raceway. Specifics of the drugs involved were not disclosed.

NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter said NASCAR received the test results today at noon.

Mayfield is in the first year as owner/driver of the No. 41 Mayfield Motorsports Toyota. In 433 career starts, the Owensboro, Ky., native has amassed five victories, 48 top-five and 96 top-10 finishes. In his career, Mayfield has earned $21.4 million.

This season with his own team, Mayfield has qualified for five of the first 11 races, with a best finish of 32nd at Talladega. He failed to qualify for tonight’s Southern 500 Presented by GoDaddy.com at Darlington Raceway.

Ironically, Mayfield just appeared in a newly released music video by the band Saving Abel, a video that chronicled the struggles of an underfunded race-car driver. The video is for the song “Drowning (Face Down).”
