Jimmie Johnson took a huge step towards a sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup championship on Sunday and is now back atop the NASCAR points and the FOXSports.com/SPEED.com Power Rankings.

The new list, following Sunday’s Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway:

1. JIMMIE JOHNSON — A tremendous effort by Johnson and the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team to score maximum points. Pole, lead the most laps, win the race — can’t do much better than that. Last week: 2nd.

2. BRAD KESELOWSKI — A sixth-place finish was as good as Keselowski could have reasonable hoped for, and after qualifying 32nd, he could have done a whole lot worse. Last week: 1st.

3. CLINT BOWYER — After dominating the middle stages of the race, Bowyer faded late and finished fifth, but moved up to third in points. Really good this year, probably not good enough to take the title, though. Last week: 3rd.

4. KASEY KAHNE — Although he has flown mostly under the radar, Kahne has earned more points in the Chase than anyone not named Johnson or Keselowski. Excellent third-place run at Martinsville. Last week: 5th.

5. JEFF GORDON — A seventh-place finish moved Gordon to sixth in points, matching his season high. Slowly recovering from the bad start at Chicagoland. Last week: 9th.

6. DENNY HAMLIN — A heartbreaking day for Hamlin, who had a car easily capable of winning yet suffered through two pit-road speeding penalties and a wonky ECU that left him 33rd and out of championship contention. Last week: 4th.

7. MATT KENSETH — Not a very good day for the Ford contingent, which is often the case at Martinsville. Kenseth finished 14th, which was disappointing for sure. Last week: 6th.

8. MARTIN TRUEX JR. — The worst race of the Chase for Truex, who came home 23rd. Tough result after finishing second at Kansas a week earlier. Last week: 8th.

9. GREG BIFFLE — The Biff finished 10th, but was never a factor in the outcome of the race. This might be Roush Fenway Racing’s worst track now. Last week: 10th.

10. TONY STEWART — Considering that Stewart won this race last year, one wonders what happened this time around. Bad run ends with 27th-place finish. Last week: 7th.

11. KEVIN HARVICK — Until his engine failed, Harvick was having a decent run. Instead he finished 32nd. Last week: 11th.

12. KYLE BUSCH — Although he never led a lap, Busch finished a strong second, his best result since the Brickyard 400. Last week: 13th.

13. DALE EARNHARDT JR. — A late spin left Earnhardt 21st, but still a positive return to the cockpit after two weeks out while recovering from a concussion. Last week: 12th.

14. BRIAN VICKERS — Qualified second, finished eighth. Another great run for the super sub, who earned a contract extension at Michael Waltrip Racing. Last week: Unranked.

15. PAUL MENARD — Twelfth was a good result for Menard, who had a solid afternoon. Last week: 15th.

16. RYAN NEWMAN — If nothing else, Newman did a lot better than his boss did, finishing 11th. Last week: 19th.

17. CARL EDWARDS — Fast for a while until a spin dropped him back in the pack. Last week: 17th.

18. ARIC ALMIROLA — Fantastic effort for Almirola, who finished fourth. Last week: 16th.

19. JOEY LOGANO — JoLo came home 16th, which was OK but nothing to get emotional over. Last week: 20th.

20. JAMIE MCMURRAY — Another top-20 for McMurray, who has run a little better lately but still has had a disappointing year. Last week: 18th.
