Nobody needs to tell Kyle Busch how well his former Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson race at Martinsville Speedway.

During Busch’s tenure at the NASCAR powerhouse team from 2005 to 2007, Gordon and Johnson won five of six Cup races held at the .526-mile track. Gordon won twice in 2005, and Johnson won three races in that time span. Entering this weekend’s Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville, Johnson is riding a streak of five victories in his last six starts there.

“If I had Jeff Gordon’s or Jimmie Johnson’s success there, then I would be comfortable going there,” said Busch, who now races for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“… I haven’t had any success there, yet. I’ve got [three] top-fives and don’t feel comfortable there. I’m not very good, yet.”

Busch heads into Sunday’s race with a bit of momentum after finishing eighth in last Saturday’s NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, his best finish since placing fifth at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 20.

Even though Busch has never won a Cup race at Martinsville, it doesn’t mean he hasn’t had some success there. Before leaving Hendrick, Busch finished in the top-five three times at Martinsville, but since that time, he hasn’t been able to crack the top 20.

“I’ve had some decent runs there, where I’ve felt like we’ve had a car to win and had a shot to win,” Busch said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the track position toward the end of the race. We’ve got some work to do on trying to figure it out. I feel more comfortable going there than I did last year.”
