Martin Truex Jr. led the way as Sprint Cup drivers launched an assault on the 190-mph barrier Friday in qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway.
Truex, driving a Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, turned a fast lap of 190.369 miles per hour to win the pole for Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500, the seventh race of the Sprint Cup season.
The top four drivers on the speed list all topped 190. Matt Kenseth was second, Greg Biffle third and Mark Martin fourth. Kasey Kahne took fifth at 189.633.
Brian Vickers holds the time-trial record at TMS at 196.235.
MWR has started the season well, with Truex fifth in points and Clint Bowyer 10th.
“We’ve come a long way,” Truex said. “We’re starting to gel as a team. I feel good about this team, and I’m having so much fun coming to the track.”
The pole is the seventh of Truex’s career.
Defending Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart qualified 29th in a backup car after slapping the wall in practice in his primary car.
