NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Michigan International Speedway tend to be fuel mileage affairs, and Sunday’s LifeLock 400 was no exception, as Mark Martin nursed his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to victory at the end.

Jimmie Johnson passed race-leader Greg Biffle’s Roush Fenway Racing Ford on Lap 195 of the 200-lap race, but both Johnson and Biffle ran out of gas on the last lap, allowing Martin to win over Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Biffle.

The vast majority of the race was incident free, as the drivers managed to stay out of harm’s way for the most part.

At the drop of the green flag, Kyle Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry blew by pole-sitter Brian Vickers’ Red Bull Toyota and into the lead, with Jimmie Johnson quickly taking second. On Lap 9, Johnson dispatched Busch and took over the top spot for the first time. By Lap 26, he opened a margin of 5.812 seconds over Busch.

On Lap 32, Kurt Busch’s Penske Championship Racing Dodge Charger passed his little brother to take over the second spot. Roughly eight laps later, the first round of green-flag pit stops began. And at the one-quarter distance — Lap 50 — Johnson led Kasey Kahne’s Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge by 5.804 seconds, with Biffle third, 6.163 seconds back. Then came Kyle and Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Juan Pablo Montoya, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin.

Biffle took over second from Kahne on Lap 51, although he was nearly 7 seconds behind Johnson.

The first caution flew on Lap 74 for debris, with only 23 cars on the lead lap by this point. And with nearly half the field a lap down, Johnson already had put a lot of the competition effectively out of contention for the victory. The No. 48 Chevrolet won the race off pit road, followed by Biffle, Kahne, Montoya and David Ragan.
