CUP: Logano’s Dream Delayed

Joey Logano will not make his first NASCAR Sprint Cup start this weekend, courtesy of Tropical Storm Hanna.

When Hanna began racing up the Atlantic Seaboard on Friday, NASCAR pulled the plug on all activities at Richmond International Raceway from late Friday afternoon until the end of the day Saturday to let the bad weather blow through.

That means qualifying for the Chevy Rock ‘N’ Roll 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup was rained out, along with the race itself and NASCAR Nationwide qualifying and the Emerson Radio 250 race. The Cup race is now scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, with the Nationwide race at 6 p.m.

In the event of a rainout, the field is set per the NASCAR
rule book, which means in a Sprint Cup race, the top 35 drivers line up via car owner points and the remaining eight positions are set by attempts and, if necessary, a past-champion’s provisional.

Logano was slated to drive a fourth Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, the No. 02, which was attempting its first start of the season.

But because of the rain, Logano was one of three cars to fail to make the race, meaning the 18-year-old phenom’s Cup debut will have to wait. That said, Logano looked plenty stout early Friday, before the weather moved in.

In Friday’s lone two-hour practice session, Logano was ninth fastest of the 46 cars setting times.
