Hall of Fame Racing, which has been without a permanent driver since releasing J.J. Yeley earlier this month, will put 18-year-old Joey Logano behind the wheel of its No. 96 Toyota Camry for five races between now and the end of the 2008 season.
Hall of Fame buys its cars and engines from Joe Gibbs Racing, which on Monday introducing Logano as the replacement for the departing Tony Stewart next season.
Logano, who turned 18 in May, is scheduled to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut in two weeks at Richmond International Raceway, where he will drive a fourth JGR Toyota, this one carrying the No. 02 and like Stewart’s No. 20, sponsorship from Home Depot.
The youngster will do five Cup races with Hall of Fame this year: Sept. 14 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway; Sept. 28 at Kansas Speedway; Oct. 11 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway; Oct 18 at Martinsville Speedway and Nov. 2 at Texas Motor Speedway.
“We look forward to working with Joey during the five races he will drive the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota,” said Tom Garfinkel, co-owner of Hall of Fame Racing. “We’re happy to work with Joe Gibbs Racing to assist in Joey’s development as he prepares for a full season in Sprint Cup next year.”
“We appreciate Hall of Fame Racing helping us get Joey ready for 2009,” said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing. “They came to us with the idea before the August Michigan race and we think it’s a great win/win for all of us.”
Veteran Ken Schrader, who started seventh and finished 21st last weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, will drive the No. 96 Toyota in this weekend’s Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Schrader will also pilot the DLP Toyota at Richmond International
Brad Coleman, who was introduced by Hall of Fame as Yeley’s replacement on Aug. 6 and subsequently quit his ride in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, actually only made it into one Cup race, qualifying 43rd and finishing 38th at Michigan International Speedway two races ago. Coleman, who has been under contract as a test driver for Hall of Fame Racing since November 2007, will continue to test for the team in the coming weeks.
