Don’t look now, but Joey Logano’s turning out to be a pretty decent NASCAR Sprint Cup driver.

The 19-year-old Logano came into the 2009 season with more expectations — some would say hype — than any rookie in recent memory, and enormous shoes to fill, replacing two-time Cup champion Tony Stewart in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

At first, Logano struggled mightily. During Daytona Speedweeks, it seemed like he hit everything but the lottery, and left thoroughly rattled. But since then, he demonstrated improvement and a level of maturity you wouldn’t necessarily expect from someone so young.

Logano won a rain-shortened Cup race at New Hampshire during the summer to score his first victory in NASCAR’s top series, and he’s won five NASCAR Nationwide Series races in just 20 starts.

And lately, Logano’s stepped up his game considerably. The youngster has scored four consecutive top-15 Cup finishes, and he’s finished in the top five twice in the last three races, a fifth at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and an excellent third-place run Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

To his credit, Logano demonstrated how much he’s learned with his Talladega weekend. During practice on Friday, he figured out that his JGR Toyota was a good pusher — a car that ran really well behind someone else. So he sought out drafting partners, and he spent most of the race getting ready for the inevitable wild shootout when the race is on the line.
