Rev Racing’s Dylan Smith will honor a 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee this summer during the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Smith will carry the No. 34, made famous by NASCAR's first African American winning driver, Wendell Scott, when the US Legends Car series gets underway this afternoon at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Much like Scott, this driver, with Haitian origins, has a passion for racing and wants to represent the up-and-coming African Americans in this sport.
Smith started racing in 1997, when he was only 4-years-old, in the kid kart division at Thunder Road SpeedBowl, in Barre, Vermont. After winning several races during his three years in this division, Smith stepped up to the World Karting Association's sanctioned purple plate. After two top-5 points division finishes during his two years of competition in this series, Smith moved up to the Junior Sportsman 2 Kart division at Thunder Road where he won his first championship.
After nine seasons of kart racing, Smith entered the Allison Legacy North Racing Series, where he first honored his mentor, Wendell Scott, by running the No. 34 with “In Memory of Wendell Scott” above his right window. After only two full seasons, Smith won the championship in this series.
In 2009, Smith was selected to attend the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine. Although he wasn't selected as a program driver that year, he was asked to participate in the 2010 combine where he demonstrated his skill and ability.
“He (Smith) is one of our team mechanics and has been involved, at some level, with our program for two years now,” said Rev Racing general manager Derik Crotts. “He performed extremely well at the NASCAR Drive For Diversity Combine, in 2010. So, when the opportunity presented itself for Rev Racing to participate in the Shootout Series, we felt he had earned the right to drive our car and honor the legacy of Wendell Scott”
With the help of Max Siegel, Inc., Toyota and Rev Racing, Smith will return from his two-year hiatus and once again follow in the footsteps of his longtime hero, Wendell Scott.
“This is truly an honor” said Smith. “This number has always been an important part of my racing career and now it feels like someone upstairs must have had a hand in putting us together again.”
A strong supporter of Rev Racing, Sybil Scott, daughter of Wendell Scott, was excited to hear the team wanted to pay tribute to her late father.
“Our family is humbled to have Dylan carry Daddy’s number in the Summer Shootout,” said Scott. “This is the kind of thing Daddy envisioned for the future, even though he wasn’t sure how it would be played out. He always knew that his efforts would serve as an inspiration for others with the same passion as he had.”
