There’s nothing fun about being on the outside looking in, but that’s exactly the position David Ragan and Kasey Kahne find themselves in heading into the last race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup regular season.

With 25 races in the books, Ragan is 13th in Sprint Cup points, just 17 behind Clint Bowyer, while Kahne is 14th, 48 in arrears of Bowyer. Saturday night’s Chevy Rock ‘N’ Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway will be the last chance for Ragan and Kahne to qualify for the 12-man Chase for the Sprint Cup, because after RIR, the Chase field will be set.

It’s about as nerve-wrack a scenario as a driver can have. “Coming in for your last chance (to make the Chase), you’ve got to hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth,” said Kahne’s teammate at Gillett Evernham Motorsports, Elliott
Sadler, who raced his way into the Chase at RIR three years ago. “It’s that kind of mentality that you’ve got to have. My teammate (Kahne) is going through it right now. … It’s just a gut-wrenching week as far as nerves. I understand what these drivers are going through. There’s nothing fun about coming to Richmond on the outside looking in or even on the bubble knowing you have to be mistake-free to make your way to the Chase.”

Of the two Chase contenders, Ragan has been the better performer in recent weeks. In the last eight races, the second-year Georgia driver has amassed three top fives, five top 10s and just one finish worse than 14th.

During the same period, Kahne failed to record a single top-five finish, finishing seventh three times as he fell from eighth in points all the way to 14th.
