Kyle Busch, who is hoping to score a tripleheader victory this weekend, led the first of two Saturday morning practices for tomorrow’s AAA Texas 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Busch won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race Friday night at TMS, and will go for his sixth consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series race victory at the 1.5-mile track this afternoon.

He looked pretty stout in his Joe Gibbs Racing Sprint Cup car Saturday morning as well, topping the speed charts at 189.228 miles per hour in the opening 45-minute session.

Carl Edwards, a three-time Texas winner, was second fast at 188.475 mph in his No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Then it was Martin Truex Jr.’s Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, 187.669 mph, and Ryan Newman, who clocked in at 187.169 mph in the No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. That meant all four manufacturers were represented in the top four positions.

The second five consisted of Tony Stewart, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle.

Of the three contenders for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, Jimmie Johnson fared best, running 11th fastest. Denny Hamlin was 18th and Kevin Harvick 31st.
