CUP: Busch, Harvick Brew Some Hostility
Darlington race ends with some unhappy drivers…

Now we might need a scorecard – no, maybe a computer matrix – to keep up with the feuds.

Juan Pablo Montoya vs. Ryan Newman.

Juan Pablo Montoya vs. Jimmie Johnson.

Juan Pablo Montoya vs. Fill In The Blank.

Kurt Busch vs. Penske Racing’s front office.

Clint Bowyer vs. “the nature of the beast”.

And now, for our featured event, at the top of the card, Kevin Harvick vs. Kyle Busch.

This last one could be one for the record books.

Harvick and Busch tangled late in Saturday night’s Southern 500, a race both could have won. Instead, upstart Regan Smith survived the chaos and drove into victory lane for the first time in his career and the first win by the Furniture Row Racing team.

As Smith cried and celebrated in victory lane, Harvick and Busch were having a major disagreement over the accident that ended their chances to win.

They bumped on the frontstretch with two laps to go, a tangle that also involved Bowyer, Harvick’s teammate. Bowyer’s car slid and slammed into the inside wall. After the race, Bowyer called the mayhem “the nature of the beast”.

As for Harvick and Busch, they weren’t finished. Busch drove into the rear of Harvick’s car, turning him sideways and into traffic. Harvick was not hit, however, and regained control of his car.

They bumped again after the race. Harvick climbed out of his car and lunged through the window of Busch’s car, apparently trying to hit him, as Busch drove away. Minutes later, members of their crews exchanged some comments and menacing looks in the garage area as NASCAR officials kept them apart.

Busch, Harvick and team owners Joe Gibbs and Richard Childress were summoned to the NASCAR hauler after the race to discuss the incident. NASCAR officials were more disturbed about what happened after the race than what happened in the on-track incident.

Penalties are expected to be announced Tuesday.

Busch said Harvick “drove into the back of me” to start the accident as they raced for position. He called it “just unacceptable racing.”

Harvick, clearly upset about the incident, had settled down somewhat by the time he talked to reporters.

“Obviously, we were just racing hard and doing what we had to do there at the end and things happen,” he said.

Next up: Dover. Then the Sprint All-Star Race.

Could be interesting.
