Although Kyle Busch was clearly frustrated that he couldn’t put his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry in Victory Lane at Watkins Glen as he did in 2008, the Las Vegas native still had a big day Monday.

Kyle Busch Stats

Busch finished fourth Monday in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen, coming home behind Tony Stewart, Marcos Ambrose and Carl Edwards. That result, combined with the problems of some of his fellow competitors, moved Busch to within 58 points of the top 12 in NASCAR Sprint Cup points with four races left until the field is set for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Given that coming into the race, Busch was 101 points out of 12th, cutting nearly half of that deficit proved to be a very good thing indeed.

“That wore me out right there,” said a somewhat frazzled Busch after the race. “I could barely hang on to fourth. It was great for all the M&M’s team guys. They did a great job this weekend. We fought hard. It was three times harder than I had to drive here last year, and last year we spanked them.”

With 22 of 26 races complete in NASCAR’s regular season, Glen winner Tony Stewart now holds a commanding 260-point lead over Jimmie Johnson, with Jeff Gordon third, 342 points back. Those three, along with Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards are all virtual locks to qualify for the Chase.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished sixth at the Glen, is seventh in points and holds a 154-point lead over 13th-place Kyle Busch. In between them are Kasey Kahne (+127), Ryan Newman (+100), Greg Biffle (+91), Mark Martin (+89) and Matt Kenseth (+58).
