Kurt Busch, rolling through what has become a strong mid-season for him, put another notch in his belt Friday by winning the pole for Sunday’s Heluva Good 400 Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Busch, who has finished in the top 10 in five of the past seven races and recently won the Sprint All-Star Race non-points event, turned the fastest lap at MIS with a speed of 189.984 mph. He’ll start first in Sunday’s 1 p.m. (ET) race.

Following Busch in the top five were Jamie McMurray, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Burton.

The pole is Busch’s second of the season and the 12th of his career. It was his first, however, at MIS.

“It feels good to finally put one together after missing it by a little for years,” said Busch, who has run 19 Sprint Cup races here. “You have to have the full package here. I’ve missed it a lot of times off turn four. Today that was my strong point.

“You’ve got to have the horsepower, the aero, the handling and, most importantly, the most underrated factor – optimal track conditions.”

Busch was 11th in the qualifying order and made his run as clouds draped the track. Later in the session, bright sunshine made the track surface slower.

Series point leader Kevin Harvick qualified 31st.

The fourth-place Kahne was the only Ford driver in the top 10. Ford is looking for its first seasonal win Sunday.
